Innovation and commitment to the environment: reducing our CO2 emissions

Which is TotalEnergies strategy to become the responsible energy major? In 2020, we adopted a new climate ambition: to achieve carbon neutrality in our business by 2050.

In line with this ambition, TotalEnergies EP Brasil has been developing projects focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in oil & gas Exploration & Production operations.


Hybrid vessel - Use of batteries in offshore support vessels

In partnership with PUC-Rio university, TotalEnergies EP Brasil is developing an innovative project. It is the conversion of a Platform Supply Vessel (PSV), used in E&P offshore activities, to an optimized hybrid propulsion, using batteries and diesel. The technology, pioneer in the country, is in the testing phase.

But what is the practical effect of this innovative project? It foresees a decrease in the use of diesel and a consequent reduction in gas emissions (NOx and methane) from the vessel.

Cargo Transfer Vessel (CTV) - Innovative oil transfer system

TotalEnergies EP Brasil also implemented an innovative system for carrying out oil transfer operations (offloading) using a Cargo Transfer Vessel (CTV). The new tested offloading system allows the entire operation to be carried out at the field location, eliminating the need of a tanker journey and thus guaranteeing not only a reduction in risks and costs, but also a reduction in CO2 emissions. The system was tested in the Lapa Field, operated by TotalEnergies.


Jogue Limpo (Fair Play) Institute is the entity that manages the reverse logistics for post-consumption lubricant oil plastic packaging, made available by lubricant manufacturers, importers, and distributors. TotalEnergies is one of the partners of Jogue Limpo Institute.


Jogue Limpo hires logistics operator companies in the states where it operates. These companies are responsible for registering generators, collecting and receiving packages, and managing storage centers.

The entire fleet of trucks is equipped with high technology, meeting the requirements of safety, control, and care for the environment. The monitoring system allows tracking of routes and information on the weight of the plastic received at the registered generating points. A receipt is issued upon arrival of the packaging. This proof may be required by the environmental agency during the generator licensing process. The weight information is transmitted in real time to the system's website, by reading the barcode on the smartphone available on each truck. Visits to the Itinerant Receiving System are carried out on a scheduled and periodic basis to registered generators.

At the receiving centers, the packages are drained, in some cases segregated by color, and pressed or ground, to be then packed and sent to accredited recyclers.

In the recycling center, if necessary, the material is crushed. After undergoing a decontamination process of the residual lubricating oil, it is transformed into raw material for new packaging and other plastic products, thus returning to the production chain.

In this way, a virtuous cycle is created, avoiding the waste of plastic material derived from oil.
